Gloves turn sign language into speech

by Megan Meagher

Some Ukrainian students just gave a voice to sign language. The winner of Microsoft's 10th Annual Imagine Cup is EnableTalk, a pair of sensory gloves that turn sign language into speech. 15 sensors on the gloves determine the gesture being signed while Windows software for smartphones converts them into sound waves which is then translated into speech using Mmicrosoft's Speech. The device is only $50 but could get down to $20 if it goes into mass production.
